Sudan’s RSF says it captured army’s headquarters

(MENAFN) Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) claim to have captured the army’s headquarters in Al-Fashir, the capital of North Darfur, which has been under blockade for over a year. The UN has documented widespread attacks on civilians in the city, including the killing and maiming of more than 1,000 children.

An RSF spokesperson said Sunday that the group gained full control of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) Sixth Infantry Division command following “heroic battles marked by precise operations and strategic sieges.”

“The liberation… represents a pivotal milestone in the battles waged by our valiant forces. It outlines the contours of a new state that all Sudanese will participate in building,” the official stated.

The Sixth Infantry Division headquarters is reportedly the army’s last major stronghold in Darfur, where clashes between SAF and RSF forces have continued for more than two years. Since placing Al-Fashir under siege in April 2024, the RSF has been accused of repeatedly targeting civilians with drone and artillery strikes. UN estimates suggest that approximately 260,000 civilians, including 130,000 children, remain trapped inside the city with limited access to aid.

Earlier this month, strikes on a mosque and the Saudi Hospital—Al-Fashir’s last functioning medical facility—killed at least 20 people, following roughly 100 civilian deaths in September, according to rights groups.

UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher said Sunday he is “deeply alarmed” by the situation and called for an immediate ceasefire across Sudan, warning that fighters are advancing further into the city, cutting off escape routes and leaving civilians trapped, starving, and terrified.
