33,485 Forced to Flee Sudan’s El-Fasher Due to RSF Attacks

(MENAFN) At least 7,455 people were forced to flee El-Fasher in western Sudan in a single day as paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) intensified assaults, pushing the three-day displacement total to 33,485, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported late Tuesday.

Sudanese authorities, along with international and UN organizations, have accused the RSF of committing “massacres and humanitarian violations” against civilians in El-Fasher, citing “summary executions,” arrests, and forced displacement, after the group launched a full-scale assault Sunday following more than a year of besieging the city.

In its statement, the IOM noted that on Oct. 28, field teams documented an additional 7,455 people fleeing the city amid ongoing clashes. The agency said that reports indicate a cumulative total of 33,485 people displaced from Oct. 26-28.

On Monday, the IOM had reported that the number of displaced from Oct. 26-27 reached 26,030, stressing that the figures are preliminary and may change due to continuing insecurity and the rapid pace of displacement.

Most of the displaced have moved to rural areas within El-Fasher locality, while others sought refuge in Tawila, Mellit, and Kebkabiya, located west of the city, the agency said.

Unofficial figures indicate that El-Fasher’s population was approximately 500,000 before the RSF’s attack, while nearly one million residents had already been displaced in previous years.

At the same time, the El-Fasher Resistance Coordination, a local grassroots committee, released a harrowing statement: “All the wounded and injured inside the Saudi (Maternity) Hospital were collectively executed by Janjaweed militias (RSF) in horrific ways---killed while they were between life and death, at a time when humanity no longer has a place.”

The committee added that the wounded “were waiting for a helping hand, but mercy vanished before medicine could reach them, and hospitals fell into a terrifying silence, broken only by groans that suddenly ceased.”
