RSF detains thousands of civilians inside El-Fasher
The Sudan Doctors Network stated that the rebel group “continues to detain thousands of civilians inside the city of El-Fasher, and prevent them from leaving after confiscating all means of transportation used to evacuate displaced people.” The network added that residents who attempted to flee, including those injured by gunfire or suffering from malnutrition, were turned back by the militia.
Describing conditions in El-Fasher as “extremely dire,” the network highlighted severe shortages of medicine and medical personnel, some of whom remain detained or abducted by the RSF. It called for “the immediate release of all civilians, the opening of safe corridors for their evacuation, and allowing humanitarian organizations to bury the bodies that remain scattered on the outskirts of the city.”
Reports indicate that on October 26, the RSF seized control of El-Fasher and carried out “massacres” against civilians, raising concerns that the assault could deepen the geographical divisions within Sudan. RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, acknowledged on Wednesday that “violations” had occurred by his forces and stated that investigative committees had been established.
Since April 15, 2023, fighting between the Sudanese army and the RSF has continued despite regional and international mediation efforts. The conflict has claimed approximately 20,000 lives and displaced over 15 million people, both as refugees and internally displaced persons, according to UN and local reports.
