RSF Siege Forces Nearly 2,000 Civilians to Flee Sudan’s Heglig

(MENAFN) A grueling nine-day exodus has brought nearly 2,000 civilians to safety after paramilitary forces seized a strategic western Sudanese city, local media reported Tuesday.

The displaced residents escaped Heglig in West Kordofan following its capture by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), arriving exhausted in Kosti after their protracted journey. White Nile State Governor Qamar El-Din Mohamed confirmed the arrival of 1,850 people from the conflict zone, according to a state news agency.

Relief efforts have mobilized rapidly to address the humanitarian crisis. White Nile Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Lamyaa Ahmed Abdullah confirmed that "national organizations, civil society groups, and local benefactors have begun providing food assistance, shelter, and medical services to the displaced civilians."

The mass displacement stems from last week's RSF takeover of Heglig and its critical oilfield infrastructure—a strategic asset in Sudan's war-torn landscape.

Intense combat has engulfed all three Kordofan states—North, West, and South—over recent weeks, forcing tens of thousands to abandon their homes as the Sudanese army clashes with RSF fighters.

The RSF now commands Sudan's entire five-state Darfur region in the west, with the exception of northern sections of North Darfur still held by government forces. Meanwhile, the army maintains control over the majority of Sudan's remaining 13 states spanning the southern, northern, eastern, and central territories, including the capital Khartoum.

Since erupting in April 2023, the armed confrontation between Sudan's military and the RSF has claimed thousands of lives and uprooted millions from their communities across the nation's 18 states.
