Continued supply of deadly weapons is fueling devastating war in Sudan
Assistant Secretary-General Khaled Khiari told the UN Security Council that Sudan is "saturated with arms," and efforts to halt these flows have largely failed. "Calls to end these flows have gone unheeded, and there has been no accountability," he said.
Khiari highlighted the unwillingness of the warring parties to compromise or de-escalate the conflict. “While they were able to stop fighting to preserve oil revenues, they have so far failed to do the same to protect their population,” he noted, urging the Security Council to send a “clear and united message: those who enable this war will be held accountable.”
The official cited recent violence in the Kordofan region, including a Dec. 4 drone attack that struck a kindergarten and later a hospital, killing over 100 people, including 63 children. He described civilian suffering as “immense” and “unimaginable.”
The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been fighting the Sudanese army since April 2023, following the collapse of a civilian transition. On Oct. 26, RSF forces captured El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, after a 500-day siege, triggering mass displacement and leaving civilians with little access to food.
